Product Design

Challenge

  • To renew the totems, which are placed as regional markers in the green areas of Istanbul and bear the name of the area, in harmony with the environment and urban furniture with an innovative perspective.
     

  • To ensure that users are informed about the region and the rules of the region

BEFORE

Analysis of previous product for improvements

The product was designed as a rigid and flattened rectangular prism. The acrylic piece with the name of the region was unreadable from one side because of its transparency.

Hierarchically, the municipality logo occupied a significant amount of space, while the municipality logotype and directorate information moved the focus away from the region name.

The municipality logo symbol positioned on the brown color was used in the primary color blue, causing contrast problems.

IDEATION & SKETCH

Initial
conceptualization  

The product was created in a vertical and polygonal form followed by an extension of an information panel.

In the initial concept idea, a flower pot was designed by creating a reservoir next to the product. This feature was eliminated during the production phase due to the large number of products and the budget.

Vertical positioning was preferred for the legibility of the park name and to adapt it to production with names of different lengths. For the night, it is illuminated from inside so that the name can be seen.

CATEGORIZATION

Product categorization and system integrity

Different color codes were used for environmental harmony and meaning in the green areas separated as neighborhood park, grove, urban forest and coastal park. 
The green color was chosen for the abundance of neighborhood parks and the emphasis on the greenery among the concrete buildings, the pink color was chosen to refer to the plant diversity and floral colors in the groves, the orange color was chosen for the urban forests to create contrast and attract attention due to the large trees and dense greenery, and the blue color was chosen for the coastal parks with reference to the waves.

Product and concept integrity were created by adding graphic elements in harmony with the colors and categories.

SIGNBOARDS

Preparation for production and printing

In the information panel prepared for each product category, a corporate welcome message was written explaining the product vision to the public. The rules that are expected to be followed for the field are placed under the text. For the typographic hierarchy, the municipality logo was positioned as a complement to the text but as the first attraction point.

 

The graphic elements for the green areas, which are the exception of the category and whose construction is attributed to an important historical person/martyr, have been designed completely specially.
